About Gothenburg Landvetter Airport

Gothenburg Landvetter Airport (IATA: GOT) is Sweden’s second-largest airport and the main aviation hub for south-western Sweden. The airport is situated approximately 20–25 kilometres south-east of Gothenburg city centre, in the municipality of Härryda, and opened in 1977.

Landvetter Airport is a modern airport, built as a single, integrated terminal. SAS is the airport’s largest airline, accounting for around one-fifth of all traffic. In addition, airlines including Ryanair, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, Finnair, British Airways and Wizz Air fly to and from Gothenburg Landvetter.

As a passenger, you may find that – particularly during peak times – there can be queues at security, just as at any other airport. It is therefore always advisable to arrive early, especially if you are catching a flight to a country outside the Schengen Area.

When can you claim compensation for flights to and from Gothenburg Landvetter?

It is not the airport but the airline that is responsible for paying compensation. The EU Regulation applies to flights from or to the EU operated by an EU-based airline, and you can typically claim compensation in three situations:

1. Delayed flight

If your flight arrives at your final destination more than three hours late, you may be entitled to compensation. In addition, delays of over two hours entitle you to meals and the opportunity to contact family, friends or work by phone or email. For delays of five hours or more, you can choose to cancel your journey and receive a full refund of the ticket price.

2. Cancelled flights

If your flight from Gothenburg Landvetter is cancelled and you are notified less than 14 days before the scheduled departure, you may be entitled to compensation. The only exception is if the cancellation is notified well in advance – cancellations notified more than 14 days before departure do not, as a general rule, entitle you to compensation. In addition to compensation, the airline must offer you either a full refund of your ticket or rebooking onto an alternative flight to your destination, regardless of when the cancellation was notified.

3. Denied boarding (overbooking)

Denied boarding typically occurs when a flight is overbooked, because the airline has sold more tickets than there are seats available. In this situation, the airline must first try to find volunteers who, in exchange for a bonus or rebooking, are willing to give up their seat. If this is unsuccessful and you are involuntarily denied boarding, you are entitled to compensation and alternative transport from the airline.

Remember to ask for a written explanation from the airline if you are denied boarding at Gothenburg Landvetter. This could be crucial for your compensation claim.

Claim compensation

How much compensation can you claim?

Passengers can claim up to €600 in compensation, depending on the flight distance and the length of the delay. The compensation does not depend on what you paid for the ticket, but solely on the length of the journey and how late your flight is when you arrive at your final destination.

The flight distance from the UK to Gothenburg Landvetter is less than 1,500 km, which, as a general rule, entitles you to up to €250 (approx. £520) in compensation per passenger for a delay of more than three hours. If you are travelling on from Gothenburg to a more distant destination via a connecting flight, the compensation may be higher.

When is the airline not required to pay compensation?

Compensation only applies if the delay or cancellation is due to circumstances within the airline’s control. If it is instead due to an extraordinary circumstance, the airline is exempt from paying. An extraordinary circumstance is a situation beyond the airline’s control which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. You can find examples and read more about extraordinary circumstances here.

Technical problems with the aircraft are generally considered to be within the airline’s control and therefore do not exempt it from paying compensation. The same applies to problems with baggage handling or a shortage of crew, as these matters normally fall under the airline’s responsibility.

Your rights to assistance in the event of delays and cancellations

Regardless of whether you are entitled to financial compensation, as a passenger you are always entitled to assistance from the airline in the event of delays and cancellations:

  • Hotel accommodation if the delay requires an overnight stay

  • Transport between the airport and the hotel

  • Alternative transport or rebooking to your destination
