Strike at German airports on 9-10 March 2025

Strikes often affect several German airports, causing chaos for travelers. The strike on 9-10 March caused delays and cancellations on thousands of flights.  

 

Who went on strike? 

At the call of the German trade union Verdi, thousands of employees across 13 German airports went on strike.  

 

These airports were affected:

Frankfurt am Main (FRA) - Munich (MUC) - Berlin-Brandenburg (BER) - Düsseldorf (DUS) - Cologne/Bonn (CGN) - Dortmund (DTM) - Weeze (NRN) - Hamburg (HAM) - Hannover (HAJ) - Bremen (BRE) - Stuttgart (STR) - Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden (FKB) - Leipzig/Halle (LEJ)  
 

Why did they go on strike? 

In connection with collective bargaining, the Verdi trade union demanded better pay and working conditions for airport employees. The demands were not met by the employers, which is why they called for a strike. 

After a few days of strike action, an agreement was reached between Verdi and airport employers. 

 

How does it affect travellers? 

Up to 500,000 passengers have had their flights cancelled or delayed due to the strike. Many have had to rebook or cancel their scheduled flights, which can be an expensive and inconvenient process.  

 

Is there a claim for compensation 

Unfortunately, as a general rule, there is no right to compensation in connection with this strike.

Your EU rights during a strike in Germany

Did you know that EU Regulation 261/2004 is made to protect air passenger rights? If a flight delay or cancellation is caused by strikes, you may be entitled to compensation, depending on the nature of the strike.   • You have a valid confirmation of your booking and you were present at check-in according to the airline's requirements.
  • The delay or cancellation was due to circumstances such as a strike by the airline's own employees, technical faults on the aircraft or anything else within the airline's control.

When does compensation not apply?

You are not entitled to compensation if the strike is caused by:

  • Extraordinary circumstances, such as a strike among airport staff (security control, baggage handling, etc.).
  • Extreme weather conditions or other unforeseeable events beyond the airline's control.
