- Has your flight been delayed or cancelled?
Limitation period
The limitation period is the legal time limit within which you can bring a claim for compensation following a flight delay or cancellation.
In the UK, the limitation period for flight compensation claims is generally 6 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 5 years in Scotland. This means you may still be able to claim compensation for flight disruptions that happened several years ago.
The time limit is calculated from the date of the flight disruption, rather than from the date you became aware of your right to compensation.
Example: If your flight was cancelled 2 years ago, you may still be entitled to claim up to £520 in compensation under UK Regulation 261/2004 (UK261), depending on the circumstances. Always keep your booking confirmation, flight details and other relevant documentation to make it easier to pursue your claim.
Meaning: Legal deadline, time limit for claiming compensation
Relevant for: Flight delays, flight cancellations, compensation claims
Regulation: UK Regulation 261/2004 (UK261), Limitation Act 1980 (England and Wales), Limitation (Northern Ireland) Order 1989 and Prescription and Limitation (Scotland) Act 1973
