ESTA
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) is an electronic entry authorisation required for citizens of visa-waiver countries, including Sweden, travelling to the US without a visa. Applications are made online via the official government website esta.cbp.dhs.gov before departure.
Meaning: Electronic entry authorisation for the USA
Relevant to: Check-in, denied boarding
Regulation: US Department of Homeland Security (ESTA programme)
What does this mean for your flight?
Without a valid ESTA, the airline may deny you boarding for a flight to the US – it is your own responsibility to ensure you have the authorisation in place before you check in. Being denied boarding at the gate due to an invalid ESTA is not normally considered the airline’s fault and does not entitle you to compensation.
Example: If your ESTA has expired, you may be denied boarding even if you have a valid ticket.
