Your EU rights in the event of a SAS strike

Did you know that passengers on flights to or from the EU/UK are protected by EU Regulation 261? This means that, as a passenger, you can claim compensation if your journey is delayed or cancelled due to an internal strike at the airline.

Regulation (EC) No 261 protects you if your flight was cancelled with less than 14 days’ notice, or if a delay causes your arrival to be more than 3 hours late. All you need is a confirmed booking for your flight to be eligible.

When can I claim compensation from SAS due to a strike?

You can claim compensation if your flight was affected by an SAS strike and the following conditions are met:

  • Your flight was cancelled less than 14 days before the scheduled departure.

    Or

  • Your flight was delayed by more than 3 hours.

How much compensation can I expect?

The compensation depends on the distance of your journey and can be up to £520 per person:

Flights 1.501 - 3.500 km

Flights over 3.500 km between EU-countries

When am I not entitled to compensation from SAS in connection with a strike?

You are not entitled to compensation if the delay or cancellation is due to:

  • External strikes, e.g. by airport security or baggage handling staff.

  • Extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control (e.g. bad weather or airspace closures).

In these cases, however, the following rights still apply:

  • The right to rebooking or a refund of the ticket.

  • The right to meals, accommodation and transport in the event of long delays.

We can advise you on your options, even if compensation is not an option.
