Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN): Get compensation for delays and cancellations

Have you experienced a flight delay or cancellation from Arlanda Airport (also known as Stockholm Arlanda Airport) in Stockholm? If your journey has been affected by a flight delay, cancellation or denied boarding, you may be entitled to financial compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004

Common causes of delays at Arlanda Airport

Delays at Stockholm Arlanda typically occur due to bad weather, and at times snow clearance and de-icing, which can affect the airport’s capacity. In addition, busy periods, air traffic restrictions and the airlines’ own operational issues, such as late-arriving flights or technical challenges, can also lead to delays.

When can you claim compensation for flights to and from Stockholm?

The EU261 rules do not apply to the airport itself, but to the airline operating the flight. This means you can receive compensation if the airline is responsible for the delay or cancellation.

You can typically receive compensation for:

  1. Flight delay

If your flight arrives 3 hours or more later than scheduled, you may be entitled to compensation.

  2. Flight cancellation

If your flight is cancelled and you are notified less than 14 days before departure, you are likely entitled to compensation, with exceptions such as rebooking.

  3. Denied boarding

If you have a valid ticket and arrive in good time but are denied boarding due to overbooking, you may be entitled to compensation.

How much can you get in compensation?

The compensation depends on the distance of your flight and the duration of the delay. Compensation can range from €250 to €600 (approximately equivalent to £215 to £520). Here is an overview:

Extraordinary circumstances: Strikes, ATC and other disruptions

If air traffic is affected by extraordinary circumstances beyond the airline’s control, such as strikes by airport staff or ATC (Air Traffic Control) issues, you may not be entitled to compensation. However, you are still entitled to assistance such as meals, accommodation and transport, and you are always entitled to rebooking or a refund if the flight is cancelled.

Good to know: Strikes by airline staff are not considered extraordinary circumstances under EU Regulation 261, and passengers are therefore entitled to compensation if this is the reason for their flight’s delay or cancellation. Read more about the compensation rules in the event of a strike here.
